Piedmont Pathology enjoys the unique distinction of having on our staff one of the less than ten fellowship-trained GI pathologists in North Carolina.

Piedmont Pathology provides high quality GI pathologic diagnoses, usually within 24 hours of specimen receipt, even with special stains. Reports are available through an encrypted internet link, or by fax, FedEx, or mail.

Our highly trained team is available to you for immediate consultation by their office telephone or personal cell phone 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Neil P. Patel, MD
Dr. Neil Patel completed his GI Pathology Fellowship at the AmeriPath Institute of Gastrointestinal Pathology and Digestive Disease in Cleveland, Ohio  in 2008. He also completed a Cytopathology Fellowship at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem in 2007.

Dr. Patel served as Co-Chief Resident of Anatomic and Clinical Pathology from 2005 to 2006 in the Department of Pathology at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He completed an internship there in 2002 in the Department of Pediatrics. He graduated from Wake Forest University School of Medicine in 2001. He is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and has a Bachelor of Science in Biology with Distinction.

Dr. Patel is married to a real estate attorney and they have two children. He enjoys various outdoor physical activities including water sports and running in 5K and 10K road races.  His other interests include:

Kerry D. Payne, MD
Dr. Payne completed his Fellowship in Gastrointestinal and Liver Pathology at GI Pathology in Memphis, TN in 2008. His Residency in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine was completed at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston in 2007.

In 2003 Dr. Payne received his MD from Mercer University School of Medicine in Macon, GA . He is a BS Magna Cum Laude graduate with a double degree in Chemistry and Biology from North Georgia College and State University in Dahlonega, GA.

Dr. Payne is a motorcycle enthusiast. He is also an avid outdoorsman and likes to go hunting and fishing with Dr. Vogel, one of the owners of Piedmont Pathology. Dr. Payne and his wife also enjoy hiking. Their vacations are often spent pursuing their outdoor hobbies in beautiful locations the world over. They live in Hickory.
